Filmed live concert by D’Angelo & The Vanguard at the North Sea Jazz Festival, at Ahoy in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on 10 July 2015. A pioneer of neo-soul, D’Angelo was then back on stage carried by Black Messiah, the acclaimed album released in late 2014 after more than a decade of silence. Surrounded by The Vanguard — with bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Chris Dave and trumpeter Keyon Harrold — the multi-instrumentalist singer delivers a groovy, organic set between thick funk, sensual soul and jazz. The capture runs through Ain’t That Easy, Vanguard Theme, Betray My Heart, Spanish Joint, Really Love, The Charade, the classic Brown Sugar and Sugah Daddy. This full concert, the artist’s third and last appearance at North Sea Jazz, testifies to his rare bandleading art and to the cohesion of an exceptional group. Having passed away in October 2025, D’Angelo leaves a major mark on contemporary soul. This high-definition live capture is a precious document for hearing, in 2015, one of modern soul’s greatest names at the peak of his stage form.
