A live session filmed at NPR Music’s Tiny Desk in Washington on February 19, 2020, this intimate concert features British singer Rex Orange County, born Alex O’Connor. Backed by a small ensemble of brass, keys and rhythm section, the then-21-year-old performs four songs: “Loving Is Easy,” “Pluto Projector,” “Always” and “Sunflower.” The set draws heavily on the album Pony (2019) and foregrounds his raw-nerve pop songwriting, where vulnerability meets soul- and jazz-tinged arrangements. In the Tiny Desk’s close, stripped-back format, Rex Orange County’s voice and phrasing find an ideal frame, far from studio polish. Captured just before NPR paused its in-person tapings, this live recording is a valuable snapshot of a songwriter on a steep rise. A filmed live concert to savour for fans of intimate pop and contemporary bedroom pop, and a reminder of how much presence his songs carry with only a handful of players around a cramped office desk.
