Arctic Monkeys (Alex Turner) — KEXP, Seattle, 2011

Why this recording

Billed under the band's name, the KEXP session actually features Alex Turner alone on acoustic guitar, on August 10, 2011. All three songs come from Suck It and See, the album then being promoted: “Reckless Serenade”, the title track and “Love Is a Laserquest”. Kevin Cole hosts, Julian Martlew handles the audio, and three camera operators share the shooting, edited by Jim Beckmann. The video went online in late September 2011, seven weeks after the recording.

Live session filmed on August 10, 2011 at KEXP Studios in Seattle. Despite the band name, this is a solo acoustic set by Alex Turner, singer and guitarist of Arctic Monkeys, appearing on behalf of the Sheffield band during the touring cycle around the album Suck It and See. This full performance gathers three songs — «Reckless Serenade», «Suck It and See» and «Love Is a Laserquest» — stripped of their studio arrangements and reduced to voice and guitar. The format foregrounds Turner’s songwriting, his vocal melodies and phrasing, in a rare bareness for the group. Filmed live on KEXP, this short but dense set offers an acoustic counterpoint to Arctic Monkeys’ usual electric force and stands as a telling document of the band’s move toward a more measured romanticism, two years before the AM turning point. A live session worth hearing to grasp the raw material of the songs before their fuller production.
