Why this recording

Scheduled in June 2026 as part of a Black Music Month series honouring BET's legacy, this set belongs to a run conceived as an overview of Black music. According to producer Alanté Serene, Ayra Starr had dreamed of the Desk since she was 14 and swapped her usual stage looks for a plain black sweatsuit so the focus would stay on her presence and voice. After “Tornado”, unreleased at the time of posting and slated for the album Starrgirl, the set closes on two faith-infused songs, “Amin” and “Orun”. Directed by Maia Stern, mixed by Josephine Nyounai.

Recorded in 2026 at NPR’s studios in Washington D.C. as part of Black Music Month, this Tiny Desk Concert features Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, one of the most prominent voices in Afropop and global Afro-fusion. Backed by her band, she performs eight songs: “Birds Sing of Money”, “Gimme Dat”, “Who’s Dat Girl”, “Tornado” (an unreleased track from the upcoming album Starrgirl), “Rush”, “Commas”, “Amin” and “Orun”. The Tiny Desk’s acoustic, stripped-down format highlights her deep timbre and stage presence, far from the polished production of her records. Between Afro-fusion grooves, dreamy soundscapes and more introspective, spiritually tinged songs, this live concert reveals the breadth of her talent and the Nigerian roots of her art. A valuable document of the world and Afropop scene of 2026, in which a new generation of African artists is asserting itself on the international stage. An ideal session for discovering Ayra Starr in an intimate setting and exemplary sound quality, filmed by the NPR Music team.
