On April 23, 2016, the Baltic Sea Philharmonic closed its “Baltic Sea Landscapes” tour at the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, Russia. This full live concert, conducted by founding chief conductor Kristjan Jarvi, brings together some eighty young musicians from the ten countries bordering the Baltic Sea. The program sets Nordic and Baltic repertoire in dialogue, Sibelius (Karelia Suite), Arvo Part (Swansong), Gediminas Gelgotas, with Prokofiev, whose 125th anniversary was celebrated that evening, through his Symphony No. 1 “Classical” and his Piano Concerto No. 3, performed by Georgian pianist Alexander Toradze. Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and the Viljandi Suite (arranged by Gene Pritsker) round out this sonic journey. The orchestra, known for often playing from memory and standing, offers a vibrant, committed reading. A rare capture of live classical music driven by Baltic youth, this Baltic Sea Philharmonic concert in Moscow in 2016 will appeal to music lovers and to anyone who values the great repertoire performed live, where the players’ evident engagement gives even the most familiar scores a fresh, urgent charge.
