Baptists — Live on KEXP, 2013

Why this recording

Six songs in under eighteen minutes, averaging close to three minutes each: the running time alone sums up the band's format. Recorded in mid-August 2013, the session was only posted in December, with a lean crew: Hannah Levin hosting, Julian Martlew on audio, and two camera operators, Scott Holpainen and Justin Wilmore, the former also editing. The set opens with “Betterment” and ends with “Abandon”, after “Bushcraft” and “In Droves”.

Recorded on August 14, 2013 in the KEXP studio in Seattle, this filmed live session captures all the controlled violence of Baptists, the hardcore/metal quartet from Vancouver, British Columbia. Across six tracks — “Betterment,” “Think Tank Breed,” “Bullets,” “Bushcraft,” “In Droves” and “Abandon” — the band unleashes a fast, filthy, abrasive hardcore poised between crust punk and extreme metal, driven by drummer Nick Yacyshyn, widely regarded as one of the scene’s most formidable players. Released on Southern Lord, the songs come largely from the album “Bushcraft,” produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge. This raw, uncompromising performance shows why Baptists became a reference point for North American hardcore in the 2010s. Filmed with the usual rigor of the Live on KEXP series, this multi-song live capture is a rare document: an extreme band playing live, without a net, in the conditions of a radio studio. An essential filmed live concert for metal fans.
