Why this recording

Recorded on October 16, 2011, four months before its release, the session was directed by the duo Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, with recording and mixing by Jake Jackson and Brian Joseph. The setting has its own history: Lyndhurst Hall, a former church and missionary school designed in 1880 by Alfred Waterhouse, architect of the Natural History Museum. According to the labels' notes, neither Justin Vernon nor Sean Carey has piano as a first instrument, which led them to reshape the songs' form. “Babys” comes from the Blood Bank EP.

Filmed live session by Bon Iver at London’s AIR Studios (Lyndhurst Hall), released by 4AD and Jagjaguwar in February 2012. Pared back to essentials, Justin Vernon’s project appears here as a duo with his collaborator Sean Carey, both on vocals and two grand pianos, far from the expanded touring band. Riding the success of the album “Bon Iver, Bon Iver” (2011) and two Grammy Awards, Vernon delivers stripped-down, deeply moving reworkings of his repertoire — “Hinnom, TX,” “Wash.,” “Babys,” “Beth/Rest” — along with a poignant cover of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” The beautifully recorded capture lays bare the fragility of the voices and the harmonic richness of the pianos. An essential filmed concert for lovers of intimate folk and American indie. Keywords: Bon Iver live, AIR Studios, intimate folk, live session, full performance.
