Why this recording

Seven musicians surround Bow Wow behind NPR's desk: two keyboard players, including musical director Marcus Devine, a guitarist, a drummer, DJ Jus on the decks and two backing singers. In just under 22 minutes, the set opens with “Outta My System” and only brings in “Bounce With Me”, the single that launched his career, fourth. NPR credits Joshua Bryant as director and editor and Josephine Nyounai as audio engineer and mixer, while the accompanying write-up comes from producer Alanté Serene.

Premiering on 29 June 2026, this NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert features Bow Wow (Shad Moss), the American rapper who broke through as a child as Lil’ Bow Wow at the turn of the 2000s. Behind NPR’s iconic desk in Washington, he runs through a nostalgic set of his hits, from the bouncing “Bounce With Me” to “Let Me Hold You”, “Shortie Like Mine” and “Like You” — a distillation of his R&B/hip-hop golden age. The performance closes Tiny Desk’s Black Music Month programming celebrating BET, and marks a first in the series’ history: a concert that premiered on television. The Tiny Desk’s tight acoustic format, backed by a live band, reinvents these club- and radio-minded songs, revealing their melody and groove. A filmed live capture perfect for revisiting Bow Wow’s career and the feel-good aesthetic of early-2000s hip-hop.
