Broncho — Live on KEXP, 2019

Why this recording

Between the 20 May 2019 recording and its 2 September release, KEXP edited this session under Alaia D'Alessandro, from footage shot by three camera operators, Jim Beckmann, Scott Holpainen and Justin Wilmore. Kevin Suggs handled audio and Troy Nelson hosted. Four songs fill just over nineteen minutes, from the opening “Boys Got To Go” to the closing “Family Values”, by way of “Sandman” and “Weekend”.

Filmed live in the KEXP studio in Seattle and recorded on May 20, 2019, this full performance features Broncho, the indie-rock band from Tulsa, Oklahoma led by Ryan Lindsey. Across four songs — “Boys Got To Go,” “Sandman,” “Weekend” and “Family Values” — the quartet delivers its signature hypnotic garage-pop: fuzzed-out guitars, round bass lines and half-whispered vocals rooted equally in new wave and punk. Captured around the release of their album “Bad Behavior,” this live session shows a focused, minimalist Broncho faithful to the lo-fi aesthetic that built their reputation. The Live on KEXP series, a worldwide benchmark for the filmed studio session, offers a raw sound and understated visuals that leave all the room to the band’s repetitive, insistent groove. A filmed live concert that is an ideal entry point into American indie rock of the 2010s and the enduring appeal of Broncho’s deadpan cool.
