Why this recording

NPR had been trying to land BTS for a Tiny Desk for years; it took the pandemic-era "home" version of the series to make it happen. The group performs in Seoul, in the VINYL & PLASTIC by Hyundai Card record store, backed by KHAN, DOCSKIM, Kim Kiwook and Shyun. The set opens with "Dynamite", the group's first US No. 1 and first song fully recorded in English, then reaches back to "Save ME" (2016) and "Spring Day" (2017), which RM introduces with a few words about a rough summer and the spring to come. Video and audio were produced by Big Hit Entertainment.

Filmed live session by BTS for NPR’s celebrated Tiny Desk Concert, recorded in 2020 in a Seoul record store owing to the pandemic. The most popular K-pop group in the world takes on the stripped-back, acoustic format dear to NPR, backed by a four-piece live band. Across three songs — “Dynamite”, “Save Me” and “Spring Day” — the South Korean septet reveals a more organic side of its music, far from the grandiose pop productions of its stadium shows. This live capture highlights the vocals, the group’s harmonies and the quality of the performance in an intimate setting. A filmed live concert that became a cult favourite, ideal for appreciating BTS’s vocal talent and seeing how K-pop reinvents itself in the most minimalist format there is. One of the most-watched Tiny Desks in NPR’s history, this concert marked the worldwide recognition of K-pop by Western music critics. By choosing an acoustic, intimate format, BTS demonstrated the solidity of its vocal foundations. An essential live capture for understanding the cultural phenomenon the South Korean group represents on a planetary scale.
