Chicago Blues All-Stars — Buddy Guy’s Legends, Chicago, 2014

Why this recording

In autumn 2014, WYCC, PBS's Chicago station, launched a series with Buddy Guy's club: hour-long episodes combining concerts filmed on site with interviews and photos on blues history. Posted by the band itself in December of that year, this 55-minute video fits that broadcast format. The Chicago Blues All-Stars were co-founded by “Killer” Ray Allison and Daniel “Chicago Slim” Ivankovich, the latter credited in the description as a host alongside Buddy Guy.

Live capture of the Chicago Blues All-Stars at Buddy Guy’s Legends, the blues temple in Chicago. Recorded as part of the show “Buddy Guy & WYCC Present The Chicago Blues”, this filmed concert brings together musicians rooted in the electric tradition of the city that shaped the genre. On stage, the band lays down authentic Chicago blues — driving shuffles, aching slow blues and incisive guitar solos — in the warm atmosphere of a legendary club founded by the great Buddy Guy. This full concert highlights the interplay between the musicians and the fervour of a connoisseur crowd. An ideal live capture for reconnecting with the spirit of Chicago blues in the very place of its history, far from big stadiums and right up against the stage. Founded by Buddy Guy, the Legends club has become a place of pilgrimage for blues lovers the world over, carrying on the legacy of the Chicago scene. This capture, drawn from a dedicated broadcast, spotlights the living transmission of a genre born in the clubs of the South Side. A filmed live concert ideal for grasping the soul of electric blues in its original home.
