Why this recording

Johannesburg, May 2024: to mark ten years of its True Music series with Ballantine's, Boiler Room set up an Allstars stage for local heavyweights. DBN Gogo and Tyler ICU play it back-to-back, sharing one set of decks and trading selections. The same bill included Shimza and Masters At Work, so this amapiano set can be watched alongside the night's more house-oriented takes. Boiler Room released the video, close to an hour long, on 5 June 2024.

Live filmed DJ set by DBN Gogo back-to-back with Tyler ICU, two leading figures of South African amapiano, on the Allstars stage at Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music 10 in Johannesburg, on May 11, 2024. For nearly an hour, the duo trade selections b2b before the tightly packed crowd typical of the Boiler Room format. The set showcases amapiano, the genre born in South African townships around the turn of the 2010s-2020s, recognizable by its deep log-drum bass, piano pads and slow, hypnotic house groove. DBN Gogo, a pioneer of the amapiano scene and a figure in its international rise, and Tyler ICU, the producer behind several of the genre’s biggest hits, weave their styles in a continuous exchange at the decks. Captured and streamed by Boiler Room, the performance documents the vitality of Johannesburg’s club culture. The tracklist is not reliably documented.
