Ed Motta & the Frankfurt Radio Big Band — Frankfurt, 2021

Why this recording

Although it went online in 2021, the concert took place on February 16, 2017 at the hr-Sendesaal in Frankfurt; it resurfaces in Hessischer Rundfunk's Live + Mastered series, whose sound engineers, according to the channel, reworked the recording. Every arrangement is by Magnus Lindgren, who also conducts and takes a flute solo on Forgotten Nickname. The description names each soloist song by song, from Matti Klein on Rhodes to Tony Lakatos on tenor. Ed Motta keeps the solo on The Rose That Came To Bloom for himself, at 1:23:39.

A full concert filmed with the Frankfurt Radio Big Band (hr-Bigband) as part of the “Live + Mastered” series, this performance features Brazilian singer and multi-instrumentalist Ed Motta. A nephew of Tim Maia, the cult figure of Brazilian soul and groove, Ed Motta has one of the richest voices of his generation, at the crossroads of soul, jazz and refined MPB. Carried by Magnus Lindgren’s arrangements, he reworks his compositions in full big-band format — Captain’s Refusal, Farmers Wife, The Caretaker, Playthings of Luv and Simple Guy — elevated by the German orchestra’s soloists. Warm horns, sophisticated harmonies and elegant swing define this meeting of Motta’s soul-jazz world and the precision of a great radio ensemble. Recorded with exceptional sonic care, this live capture offers an ideal dive into contemporary orchestral jazz, where Brazilian culture meets the European big-band tradition.
