Erik Truffaz — Jazz à Ramatuelle, 2021

Why this recording

Twelve pieces in two hours, including a Lune Rouge whose chapter runs over eighteen minutes from 1:24:55: the programme of this August 2021 show pairs the 2019 album with older material such as El Tiempo De La Revolución, The Dawn and Istanbul Tango. Qwest TV, Quincy Jones's streaming service, presents the whole concert with chapters. The accompanying note by Vincent Caffiaux points to two moments to watch for: Lost In Bogota at 39:30 and The Dawn at 1:11:01. The cover of My Favorite Things, at 50:41, opens a brief detour into the Broadway songbook.

Live full concert by French-Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz, filmed at the Jazz à Ramatuelle festival in the Var region of southern France on 18 August 2021 and released by Qwest TV. Truffaz performs his “Lune Rouge” program, named after the 2019 album issued on Blue Note/Warner, backed by his long-standing quartet: Benoît Corboz on keyboards, Marcello Giuliani on bass and Arthur Hnatek on drums. True to his signature approach, the trumpeter — using mutes and subtle effects — extends the dialogue he has long pursued between jazz, instrumental pop, groove and electronica, favouring an airy aesthetic in which melody and space matter more than display. On the open-air stage of the Théâtre de Verdure, facing the Mediterranean, the band unfolds an atmospheric, contemplative set carried by Truffaz’s hushed, instantly recognisable tone. Filmed outdoors at one of France’s major summer jazz gatherings, this recording is a fine entry point into the quartet’s world at this stage of its career, moving between introspective moods and slow-building collective climaxes. A live concert film that captures the group’s maturity around the “Lune Rouge” material.
