Full performance filmed by Seattle radio station KEXP in 2013, as British band Foals toured the United States behind their third album, Holy Fire, released in February of that year. Fronted by singer-guitarist Yannis Philippakis, the Oxford five-piece delivers a tightened version of its jittery math-rock, built on interlocking guitar lines, round bass and slow post-rock swells. Shot in-studio under KEXP’s trademark stripped-down conditions, this live session shows the whole band up close and exposed, far from the sweat and scale of their arena and festival shows. The set gathers three songs from Holy Fire: Milk & Black Spiders, the single My Number and Moon, which closes the session on a more atmospheric note. This live full concert captures Foals at a pivotal point in the early 2010s, moving from the wiry urgency of their debut toward a broader, more textured songwriting. It is a valuable document of a band on the rise, framed in the plain, unadorned setting that has made KEXP’s in-studio performances a reference for live music on the web.
