In 2026, South African producer and DJ General C’mamane took over a Boiler Room session in Durban, the cradle of gqom, the raw electronic movement born in the city’s townships in the early 2010s. This filmed live set foregrounds the codes of gqom: heavy, syncopated kicks, the absence of a steady hi-hat, dark pads and chanted vocals that create a hypnotic trance, far removed from Western house and techno. Before a crowd dancing right up against the decks, in Boiler Room’s characteristic immersive setup, General C’mamane unfolds a DJ set celebrating the vitality of the South African electronic scene and its growing international influence. The capture conveys the communal energy and local roots of a music that has become an identity marker of Durban. A full DJ set ideal for discovering gqom and the effervescence of contemporary African electronic music, to be seen as a filmed live capture to grasp a singular sound, often filed for convenience among electro but carrying an aesthetic all its own.
