Glass Beams — Live on KEXP, 2024

Why this recording

One distinctive point about this KEXP visit: mixing and mastering are credited to Glass Beams themselves, while the station handled the recording through its engineer Kevin Suggs. Recorded on 21 May 2024 and hosted by Jewel Loree, the session was shot by four camera operators and edited by Jim Beckmann. The chapters put “Mirage” first, at almost six minutes, and “Rattlesnake” last, from 15:21. The video went online three months after the recording.

A live session filmed at Seattle radio station KEXP on 21 May 2024, this performance features Glass Beams, the Australian instrumental trio that has become a phenomenon of the global psychedelic scene. Led by Rajan Silva, the Melbourne group blends hypnotic grooves, guitars with Indian raga inflections, round basslines and synth layers, in instrumental music that draws as much on psychedelic rock as on the musical traditions of the Indian subcontinent. Recognisable by their beaded masks, the musicians run through four tracks — Mirage, Mahal, Orb and Rattlesnake — drawn notably from the EP Mahal, which propelled the band onto international stages. The spare format of the KEXP sessions highlights the precision of their interwoven melodies and the gentle trance that emanates from their playing. An ideal live capture for discovering an unclassifiable project at the crossroads of world music, psychedelia and meditative sound, filmed with the characteristic restraint of the Seattle station.
