Gregory Isaacs — Brixton Academy, London, 1984

36

Why this recording

In May 1984 the Brixton Academy hosted Gregory Isaacs with the Roots Radics, the band of Flabba Holt and Style Scott, for a show recorded on the Rolling Stones Mobile and released that year as Live at the Academy, Brixton. The video, in standard definition like most footage of the period, is a fan upload from 2011. Its chapter list reveals several medleys: "Out Deh" into "Tune In", "My Only Lover" with "All I Have Is Love" and "Love Is Overdue", "Mr. Brown" into "Storm", before "Night Nurse" and "Border" close the set.

Full concert by Gregory Isaacs, reggae’s Cool Ruler and one of Jamaica’s most elegant lovers-rock voices, captured in 1984 at Brixton Academy in London. At this point Isaacs was at his peak, carried by the international success of the album Night Nurse (1982) and by a smooth, melancholic phrasing that many imitated and none matched. This live document preserves a complete stage performance before a devoted British audience in a legendary south London venue. The set blends his rocksteady and roots classics with his lovers-rock ballads, moving between tenderness and social weight. The capture, also issued as a live record, documents a key moment in Isaacs’ career and in the spread of reggae across the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s. For followers of reggae, lovers rock and vintage live concert footage, it offers a valuable testament to an artist of quiet charisma, who died in 2010. An essential live session for understanding the golden age of Jamaican reggae as it reached and conquered European stages.
