Helmet — KEXP, 2025

Why this recording

Recorded on 5 March 2025 and posted in May, the session follows KEXP's routine: four credited camera operators, editing by Jim Beckmann, recording and mixing by Kevin Suggs, and mastering by Julian Martlew. The four songs run from 00:37 to the start of “Milquetoast” at 11:32, in a 33-minute video that also credits host Troy Nelson. Every member of this 2025 line-up is credited on vocals, something to watch for on the choruses, around Page Hamilton.

Filmed on March 5, 2025 in the KEXP studio in Seattle, this Full Performance features Helmet, the New York band founded by Page Hamilton and a major figure of 1990s alternative metal. In front of the radio’s cameras, the quartet runs through four songs live — Wilma’s Rainbow, Repetition, Dislocated and Milquetoast — several of them classics from the cult album Betty (1994). Here is the Helmet signature: angular, syncopated riffs, near-mathematical rhythmic precision and that massive, drop-tuned guitar tone that influenced generations of post-hardcore and metal bands. Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar) is joined by Dan Beeman (guitar), Dave Case (bass) and Kyle Stevenson (drums). KEXP’s head-on, audience-free format lays bare the band’s relentless machinery and the power of its groove. This filmed live concert offers a reference contemporary capture to rediscover Helmet’s alternative metal, more than thirty years after its debut, in exemplary sound and picture quality. Filmed in Seattle, it is a must-watch live video for fans of 1990s alternative metal.
