Why this recording

Two guitars, two brothers and no one else credited: the June 1, 2025 KEXP session shows Hermanos Gutiérrez in their most stripped-down setup. The timecodes open the set at 0:53 with “Lágrimas Negras / El Fantasma”, two pieces played back to back, and start “Until We Meet Again” at 13:35. Albina Cabrera hosts, Jon Roberts engineered the audio and Matt Ogaz mastered it. Three camera operators share the shooting, edited by Scott Holpainen.

Full performance by the instrumental duo Hermanos Gutiérrez, recorded live at the KEXP studio in Seattle on June 1, 2025. Formed in Zurich, the group brings together brothers Estevan and Alejandro Gutiérrez, of Swiss-Ecuadorian heritage, whose instrumental americana sits between desert folk, cumbia and cinematic soundtrack music. At this point the duo is touring behind Sonido Cósmico, released in 2024 on Easy Eye Sound and produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. This KEXP session captures the core of their language: two guitars in conversation, airy lap steel, understated percussion and evocative melodies, all with no sung word. The live set moves through Lágrimas Negras / El Fantasma, Sonido Cósmico and Cumbia Lunar before closing on Until We Meet Again. Shot in KEXP’s trademark sonic intimacy, the video conveys the precision and restraint of the brothers’ playing, balancing cinematic warmth with wide-open, desert-like space. A full concert that works as an ideal entry point into a project that has made silence and the space between notes its signature.
