Japanese Breakfast — Live on KEXP at Home, 2021

Why this recording

For the “KEXP at Home” series, Japanese Breakfast did not travel to Seattle: the session was shot at Baby's Alright in Brooklyn, with its own technical crew. The mix is by Craig Hendrix, also credited among the six musicians, and the picture is handled by director of photography Adam Kolodny, backed by a B camera. The set opens with “Kokomo, IN”, moves through “Tactics”, “Be Sweet” and “Savage Good Boy”, and ends on a short “Ballad O”, all in sixteen minutes.

Live session recorded in 2021 for Seattle public radio’s ‘Live on KEXP at Home’ show, featuring American band Japanese Breakfast, led by Michelle Zauner. Riding the success of the album Jubilee, the group presents a bright, carefully arranged indie pop, where catchy melodies meet rich orchestration — keyboards, brass and shimmering guitars. This filmed live capture, in the intimate format KEXP popularized during the pandemic, highlights Zauner’s expressive voice and the care given to the arrangements, between pop euphoria and underlying melancholy. The band runs through several key songs, including ‘Be Sweet’, ‘Kokomo, IN’ and ‘Savage Good Boy’, in a performance both polished and warm. For indie-pop lovers, this live performance is a fine gateway into the world of a project that shaped the independent scene of the early 2020s, and a demonstration of the strength of KEXP’s filmed live sessions. Between shimmering synths and driving rhythms, the set reveals how Michelle Zauner turned personal grief and hard-won joy into some of the most acclaimed indie pop of the decade.
