Joe Bonamassa — North Sea Jazz Festival, Rotterdam, 2007

Why this recording

Drawn from the official North Sea Jazz Festival archive, which posted it in 2024, the video pins the concert down precisely: the Nile hall at the Ahoy, Saturday 14 July 2007. Bonamassa appears as a quartet, with Rick Melick on keyboards, Carmine Rojas on bass and Bogie Bowles on drums. The description reproduces the press text issued at the time, which recalls him opening for B.B. King from the age of twelve. Eight songs spread over more than eighty minutes leave plenty of room for instrumental stretches.

This filmed live concert captures guitarist and singer Joe Bonamassa at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam on 14 July 2007, at Ahoy. By this point in his career the American already stands out as one of the great renovators of blues-rock, between electric tradition and soloist virtuosity. The full concert runs through pieces that became staples of his repertoire: Walk in My Shadow, So Many Roads, Mountain Time, Another Kinda Love, an extended Sloe Gin, High Water Everywhere, Woke Up Dreaming and Asking Around for You. On stage Bonamassa alternates massive riffs and finely carved solos, in a dynamic that sets 1960s British blues against stadium-rock power. The clean capture conveys the grain of his guitar tone and the balance of the band. A representative document of 2000s live blues, this filmed live concert shows an artist on the rise, before the arenas, in the prestigious setting of a landmark European festival.
