Why this recording

One moment to watch for right at the start of Street Fighter Mas: guest DJ Battlecat drops in a sample of Kendrick Lamar shouting out the saxophonist, according to NPR's notes. The programme draws on three of Kamasi Washington's albums, and producer Nikki Birch points to the shift from high-energy pieces to ballads without losing the pulse. His father, Rickey Washington, plays flute and soprano saxophone beside him. Direction and editing are by Joshua Bryant, audio technical direction by Josephine Nyounai.

Released on October 21, 2024, this Tiny Desk Concert filmed at Bob Boilen’s desk in NPR’s Washington offices features Californian saxophonist Kamasi Washington, a major figure in the renewal of contemporary jazz. Surrounded by his band — including his father Rickey Washington (flute, soprano saxophone), trombonist Ryan Porter, keyboardist Brandon Coleman, drummer Tony Austin, bassist Miles Mosley, vocalist Patrice Quinn and DJ Battlecat — he performs four songs drawn from his albums: “Lesanu,” “Street Fighter Mas,” “The Rhythm Changes” and “Asha The First.” In the cramped Tiny Desk space, Washington moves from brass-driven trance to meditative ballad without ever losing his sense of groove, extending the legacy of Coltrane’s spiritual jazz while opening it to West Coast hip-hop and soul. This multi-song live capture offers an ideal entry point into the teeming world of one of the most important jazz musicians of the 2020s. A first-rate filmed live concert and a showcase for a band operating at the peak of its powers.
