Kit Armstrong & Le Concert Olympique — Elbphilharmonie, Hamburg, 2025

Why this recording

The programme has a shape that DW Classical Music's chapters make easy to follow: Kit Armstrong opens alone with a Bach prelude and fugue, is joined by Ilya Gringolts and Christian Poltéra for the Triple Concerto, returns alone for the Piano Sonata No. 22, Op. 54, then gives way to the Eroica. The pianist moves from recital to concertante chamber music before stepping aside for Jan Caeyers' orchestra. Streamed live on 13 September 2026, the concert is chaptered movement by movement across 1 h 45.

Full-concert video of pianist Kit Armstrong and the orchestra Le Concert Olympique, conducted by Belgian conductor Jan Caeyers, performed on 8 March 2025 in the Grand Hall of the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. Titled 1804: Courage and Heroism, the programme is part of Jan Caeyers’s long-term Beethoven 27 project; a recognised Beethoven specialist, he aims to connect twenty-seven chosen works to the twenty-seven member states of the European Union. At the heart of this complete concert stand two major scores from Beethoven’s so-called heroic period: the Triple Concerto for piano, violin, cello and orchestra in C major, Op. 56, and the Symphony No. 3 Eroica. For the Triple Concerto, Kit Armstrong is joined by violinist Ilya Gringolts and cellist Christian Poltéra. Le Concert Olympique, the ensemble founded by Caeyers, is known for its historically informed approach to Beethoven’s music. Produced by DW Classical Music, this live recording offers a rigorous and vivid reading of Beethoven’s orchestral music in one of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls. It is a benchmark live concert for lovers of classical music and the symphonic repertoire.
