Leenalchi — Live on KEXP, Seattle, 2026

Why this recording

Bassist Young Gyu Jang links this session to another chapter in the revival of Korean traditional music: he already played bass for SsingSsing at NPR's Tiny Desk in 2017. The set opens with “Ultimate Prescription”, which alone runs past seven minutes, and “Tiger Is Coming” comes last, at 16:34. KEXP fields five camera operators, with Jim Beckmann also editing, and hands mastering to Matt Ogaz. The video went up in early September 2026, less than two months after the recording.

Recorded on 8 July 2026 at the KEXP studio in Seattle, this full performance features Leenalchi, the South Korean band that gained global attention for its pop reinvention of pansori, a traditional vocal art recognised by UNESCO. Across four songs — “약성가 (Ultimate Prescription)”, “신의 고향 (You Know Who I Am?)”, “새타령 (Bird)” and “범 내려온다 (Tiger Is Coming)” — the group pairs four singers with two basses and drums in a minimal, hypnotic aesthetic, with no guitar or keyboard. The result, at once ancestral and resolutely contemporary, has turned Leenalchi into a phenomenon of the new Korean scene. This capture by public radio station KEXP renders the band’s rhythmic precision and vocal theatricality in a visually spare live concert. The document illustrates the vitality of world music in 2026 and the way a centuries-old heritage can become a universal pop proposition. An ideal performance for discovering a singular group, poised between Korean oral tradition and modern groove.
