Macarena Ramírez — Festival Flamenco de León, 2017

Why this recording

On 24 June 2017 the León Flamenco Festival hosted a delegation of artists from the Bay of Cádiz, in front of more than three thousand people according to the Cortinas Negras team, who travelled to León to film the evening. This 23-minute video is the fourth and final part of their coverage. Macarena Ramírez shares the bill with María José Coca, Jesús Castilla, David Nieto, Juan Manuel Fernández and Juan José Alba. The context is what makes it matter: a twinning between León and San Fernando, with Antonio Mota's original sculpture for the Camarón monument standing on stage.

Live capture of dancer Macarena Ramírez at the Festival Flamenco de León, in Spain, in 2017. Born in La Isla de San Fernando, in the province of Cádiz, a cradle of Cádiz flamenco, Macarena Ramírez has established herself as one of the genre’s rising dancers, renowned for the speed and precision of her zapateado footwork. She has shared the stage with major figures such as Sara Baras, María Pagés, Antonio Canales and Antonio El Pipa, and performed at the Corral de la Morería tablao in Madrid. Before the León festival audience, she delivers an intense baile performance, the body answering guitar and cante in pure flamenco tradition. This live capture illustrates the format of the filmed on-stage performance: a dance played live, in the fervour of a festival. As the detail of the palos performed is not documented from a reliable source, it is not reproduced here. Year: 2017, venue: León, Spain. A filmed live concert to discover for flamenco lovers and live dance fans.
