Mexican Institute of Sound & Meridian Brothers — Live on KEXP, Seattle, 2026

Why this recording

In the credits, the audio mix goes to Eblis Álvarez himself, one of the two leaders on stage, while Kevin Suggs records for KEXP. Nine musicians share the room, with two drummers, Gerardo Beltrán and Mauricio Ramírez, and many doubled roles: Marco Carrión and María Valencia switch between brass and percussion. Albina Cabrera hosts, and Carlos Cruz edits footage from five camera operators. “Cumbia Fantasia”, the last of the four songs, starts at 14:23.

Recorded on 28 July 2026 at the KEXP studio in Seattle, this full performance brings together two major figures of alternative Latin American music: Mexico’s Camilo Lara (Mexican Institute of Sound) and Colombia’s Eblis Álvarez (Meridian Brothers). Across four songs — “Concorde”, “El Campeón (Bienes Funerarios)”, “Ritmo Babilonia” and “Cumbia Fantasia” — their worlds merge cumbia, electronics, tropicalism and experimentation into a live concert that is as festive as it is cerebral. Driven by a large ensemble (brass, layered percussion, keyboards, two drummers), the set embodies the fertile dialogue between Mexico City and Bogotá, two capitals of the reinvention of Latin popular music. The polished capture by public radio station KEXP highlights the richness of the arrangements and the collective energy on stage. This live set is a valuable document of the alternative Latin scene in 2026, where cumbia tradition and contemporary production answer one another. An ideal performance for discovering two cult artists whose meeting goes well beyond a simple collaboration.
