Michel Camilo & Tomatito — Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, 2024

Why this recording

After Spain (2000), Spain Again (2006) and Spain Forever (2016), the Michel Camilo and Tomatito duo stands among the most lasting pairings of jazz and flamenco, and Vitoria-Gasteiz hosted it in summer 2024. Posted without a description by the third-party channel MusicAudio TV, the video runs an hour and a quarter in HD, a length that suggests the full concert. The line-up is just the two of them: piano and guitar, with no rhythm section credited.

This concert brings together Dominican pianist Michel Camilo and Spanish flamenco guitarist Tomatito at the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival in the Basque Country, Spain, on 19 July 2024. Long-standing partners since their Grammy-winning album “Spain” (2000), the duo explores a dialogue between jazz and flamenco, where Camilo’s virtuoso piano answers the falsetas and compás of Tomatito’s guitar. On the stage of the Polideportivo de Mendizorrotza, the two musicians unfold an acoustic repertoire built on improvisation, Latin swing and duende, alternating original themes, standards and reworkings of the Ibero-American songbook. In 2024 this meeting confirmed a rapport spanning more than two decades, in which mutual listening outweighs mere display. The live performance highlights Camilo’s harmonic richness, shaped by both classical and jazz training, and Tomatito’s rhythmic depth as an heir to the Gypsy tradition and longtime guitarist of Camarón de la Isla. This Michel Camilo & Tomatito concert live in Vitoria 2024 captures jazz-flamenco fusion at its highest level — virtuosic, emotionally charged and respectful of both traditions — a highlight of the festival’s programme for lovers of acoustic improvised music.
