Why this recording

Shane Embury, the longtime bassist who wrote “Amoral”, was not on this US tour: Matt Sheridan plays bass on this July 15, 2026 Tiny Desk. Producer Lars Gotrich describes a small circle pit opening up among NPR's desks, and a set built as a “sandwich” around 1987 songs placed at the start and the end. The last song, “You Suffer”, lasts one second. Maia Stern directed and edited, and Josh Newell mixed.

Full performance filmed on July 15, 2026 at NPR’s Tiny Desk, in Bob Boilen’s office in Washington, DC. A cornerstone of grindcore since forming in Birmingham in the mid-1980s, the British band became the first act of the genre to take on this series known for its intimate format. This live session packs eight songs into under twenty minutes, from the opening «Instinct of Survival» to the split-second «Scum» and «You Suffer», widely cited as the shortest recorded song in history. Barney Greenway delivers his guttural vocals without the usual wall of saturated amplification, while the rhythm section scales its blast beats to the confined NPR studio. The multi-song set captures the productive tension of an extreme repertoire played almost bare, stripped of stage volume and pyrotechnics. A reference document for gauging the stamina and precision of a band still active after four decades, and for hearing what grindcore keeps of its intensity once removed from its customary sonic assault.
