Newen Afrobeat — Live in Liverpool (Live Session), 2024

Why this recording

Recorded to tape by The Lightning Cave team, the session splits engineering between Thomas Benson on tape and Jack Wait on digital, who also co-sign the mix. Caitlin Mongan and Jack Cowls shot it, with Mongan also editing. In under twenty-five minutes, the band alternates its own compositions with two Fela Kuti songs, “Ako” and “No Agreement”, placed second and fourth. The video was released on the band’s channel in April 2025.

Live session by the Chilean collective Newen Afrobeat, recorded at Quarry studio in Liverpool, United Kingdom, during their European tour in the summer of 2024. Captured live, fully analog and straight to tape, the session brings together two of the band’s own compositions, Es la vida and Grietas, and two Fela Kuti tracks, Ako and No Agreement, not as mere tributes but as deliberate reinterpretations, with shifts of rhythm and phrasing. Fronted by the voices of Fran Ri and Erin Rutledge, backed by a powerful horn section and twin percussion, the ten-strong ensemble brings afrobeat to life from South America with fervour. This live capture illustrates the multi-song live-session format, played live without a net. A filmed live concert ideal for lovers of afrobeat, groove and world music. Year: 2024, venue: Liverpool, United Kingdom. Worth discovering for the vitality of the current afrobeat scene, live world music and analog live sessions.
