Filmed recording of a Nicolas Jaar live set captured by Boiler Room in New York in 2013, staged as a takeover built around his Clown & Sunset label and tied to the Red Bull Music Academy, then based in New York. At this point Jaar was building on the success of his 2011 debut album Space Is Only Noise and developing the Clown & Sunset aesthetic, the imprint he founded in 2009 to release his own productions and work by close collaborators. The Boiler Room format, streamed live and then archived on the outlet’s YouTube channel, places the artist among the crowd in a tight space with no raised stage. The set showcases Jaar’s signature electronic language: slowed tempos, grainy textures, deep bass and detours through house and minimal. This filmed live performance documents a pivotal moment, just before he formed the duo Darkside with Dave Harrington and released the album Psychic in late 2013. A reference document for understanding Nicolas Jaar’s stagecraft and the Clown & Sunset world in the early 2010s. Keywords: Nicolas Jaar, Boiler Room, 2013, live set, DJ set, filmed live concert.
