NIKI — Live on KEXP, Seattle, 2024

Why this recording

Far from a solo acoustic set, NIKI came to KEXP with a full band: Sterling Laws on drums, Jacob Brown and Kyle Moore on guitars, Edison Lo on bass and Sarah Goldstone on keys. The station paired its crew with a guest audio engineer, Craig Frank, credited on the mix alongside Julian Martlew. Five camera operators share the shoot, edited by Scott Holpainen. “Buzz”, the title track of the 2024 album, closes the session at 11:03.

On 27 June 2024, Indonesian-American singer NIKI (Nicole Zefanya), a leading name on the 88rising label, recorded this Full Performance in the KEXP radio studio in Seattle. Aired in the “Live on KEXP” series, the filmed session captures her intimate pop songwriting and soul-tinged ballads, carried by a gentle voice and understated guitar. NIKI presents four songs, including “Buzz”, the title track of her 2024 album, alongside “Tsunami”, “Strong Girl” and “Take Care”. Renowned for its carefully recorded in-studio live sessions, KEXP provides a spare setting that foregrounds the emotion and accuracy of the performance. This live capture will appeal to fans of sensitive pop and singer-songwriters, presenting NIKI in a stripped-back format, far from big venues, a few months before the touring tied to “Buzz”. A short but dense filmed live concert, close to the artist.
