Obongjayar — Live on KEXP, Les Trans Musicales, Rennes, 2025

Why this recording

KEXP took its cameras far from Seattle for this one: the session was recorded at ESMA in Rennes during Trans Musicales 2025. The format is short, fifteen minutes for four songs, but the crew is complete: four camera operators, an edit by Jim Beckmann, mixing and mastering by Julian Martlew, and Morgan as host. Obongjayar's five-piece band includes a trumpet, played by Elias Atkinson. Marker: “Jellyfish”, the last song, starts at 11:24.

On 4 December 2025, Nigerian-British artist Obongjayar (Steven Umoh) recorded this Full Performance for KEXP at ESMA in Rennes, during the Les Trans Musicales festival. This filmed live concert captures his uncategorizable music, at the crossroads of afro-fusion, soul and electronics, driven by a raw, incantatory voice. Backed by his band — Ciaran Corr on guitar, Mutale Chashi on bass, Elias Atkinson on trumpet and Oscar Ogden on drums — Obongjayar runs through four songs: “Sweet Danger”, “Lipdance”, “Holy Mountain” and “Jellyfish”. The capture, made by the Seattle station’s team during his French visit, highlights the physical intensity of his stage presence and the rhythmic richness of his compositions. A live performance ideal for discovering one of the most singular voices of the contemporary afro-fusion scene, filmed as part of one of the most important festivals for new music.
