Oliver Mtukudzi — NPR Tiny Desk, 2013

Recorded on September 30, 2013 at the NPR Music offices in Washington D.C., this filmed live concert from the NPR Tiny Desk series features Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, one of the most respected figures in Zimbabwean music. Perched on a bar stool with an acoustic guitar, Mtukudzi delivers a stripped-down set without his longtime band, The Black Spirits. The material comes from Sarawoga, his first album following the death of his son Sam, a guitarist and saxophonist killed in a car crash in March 2010 at age 21. The performance gathers three songs: “Todii,” “Huroi” and “Haidyoreke.” Recording since the late 1970s and credited with roughly sixty albums, Mtukudzi shaped the sound known as “Tuku music,” blending mbira textures, the Zimbabwean jit rhythm and Afro-jazz, sung mostly in Shona. Produced by Bob Boilen and Denise DeBelius, this Tiny Desk captures the grain of his weathered voice and his understated guitar work a few years before his death in January 2019. It stands as an intimate live document of a Southern African icon whose songs often carried social commentary on health, loss and community.
