Otoboke Beaver — Live on KEXP, 2022

Why this recording

Six songs in just over eighteen minutes, or three minutes per track on average, introductions included. The description gives each title in both English and Japanese, from “YAKITORI” to “孤独死こわい” (“I don't want to die alone”), handy for tracking the songs down on record. All four members are credited on vocals as well as their instruments. On KEXP's side, Kennady Quille hosts, Julian Martlew engineers, Kevin Suggs masters and Jim Beckmann edits.

Filmed live performance by Japanese punk-rock band Otoboke Beaver at the KEXP studio in Seattle on 14 October 2022. The Kyoto quartet — Accorinrin on vocals, Yoyoyoshie on guitar, Hirochan on bass and Kahokiss on drums — rips through six songs at lightning speed, all razor-sharp riffs, unpredictable rhythmic breaks and shouted harmonies. Rising stars of the global punk scene after their album “Super Champon,” the band turns the studio into a burst of pure energy, swinging between hardcore fury and playful humour. The setlist runs through “I am not maternal,” “YAKITORI,” “I checked your cellphone,” “datsu . hikage no onna,” “PARDON?” and “I don’t want to die alone.” A perfect capture to discover an explosive live band, filmed with the sonic clarity that is KEXP’s hallmark. Keywords: Otoboke Beaver live, Japanese punk, KEXP, full performance, live concert.
