Why this recording

The July 18, 2024 show first yielded a seven-track live album, released on September 13; the video posted on October 1 gives the complete version, including "You Don't Know Me", "Secrets", "Black Mascara" and "Prada", which the record leaves out. RAYE opens with the blues "The Thrill Is Gone" and brings in "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" at 37:37, a song James Brown sang at the festival in 1981, according to Montreux. "Escapism", her biggest hit, closes the set from 1:00:11.

Full performance filmed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2024, later released on vinyl by the artist. After years writing for others, British singer RAYE broke through solo with the album My 21st Century Blues and the hit « Escapism », establishing a soul and jazz voice of rare power. On the shores of Lake Geneva, she delivers a sumptuous concert blending her own songs — « Genesis », « Black Mascara », « Prada », « Escapism » — with inhabited reworkings of standards like « The Thrill Is Gone » and James Brown’s « It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World ». Backed by a live band, RAYE showcases the full range of her talent, from intimate crooning to gospel swells, in a mythical venue where jazz and soul have conversed for decades. This capture conveys the elegance and emotion of a critically acclaimed performance. This filmed live performance from 2024 is an ideal document for discovering one of the most striking voices in contemporary British soul, at the peak of her art, on the prestigious Montreux stage.
