Born in the working-class outskirts of Mexico City, the band Son Rompe Pera, led by the Gama brothers, perpetuates the tradition of marimba and cumbia while striking it with a punk, garage energy. This live concert, filmed during the free Grand Performances series in the heart of Los Angeles, showcases a one-of-a-kind lineup: two marimbas up front, backed by a nervy rhythm section (bass, drums, percussion). A sunlit live recording, the video conveys the fervor of a crowd won over by this festive, cross-generational “cumbia punk,” which brings their marimba-playing father’s legacy into dialogue with a rock spirit. The marimbas’ crystalline melodies collide with frenzied rhythms, immediately inviting the audience to dance. Son Rompe Pera embodies a new, uninhibited Latin scene, as at home at major international festivals as in the neighborhoods of Naucalpan. An ideal full concert for fans of live Latin music, cumbia and bold fusions between tradition and modernity.
