Why this recording

“Love Me JeJe” had not yet been released when this was filmed, yet it closes the set: in the description, producer Bobby Carter recalls the song pulling the whole room into call-and-response. NPR's credits list nine musicians around the singer, including a bass and drums section with Eric Ingram and Robert Johnson, and three backing vocalists. Kara Frame directed and edited; Neil Tevault engineered the audio. The video came out on 3 June 2024.

A live concert filmed at NPR’s headquarters in Washington in June 2024, this Tiny Desk features Tems, the Nigerian singer and songwriter who has become one of the leading voices of the new afrobeats and alté scene. As part of a Black Music Month devoted to women in Black music, the artist takes the risk of building her set around songs from her debut album, Born in the Wild, then forthcoming. Since her Tiny Desk (home) concert a few years earlier, Tems has won a Grammy, collaborated with Beyoncé and written for Rihanna. On stage, surrounded by her music director Daniel Crawford (keys), percussionist Brett Baker and guitarist Erick Walls, she runs through Me & U, Ice T, Unfortunate, Forever and the standout Love Me JeJe. Her deep, velvety voice, between afrobeats, R&B and soul, captivates the audience. An ideal live capture for discovering a contemporary African artist at her peak, whose singular style is redrawing the contours of global popular music.
