The Teskey Brothers — Live at Gum Gully, 2018

A filmed live concert by The Teskey Brothers at Gum Gully, in Victoria, Australia. Hailing from the Yarra Valley, the quartet led by singer Josh Teskey and his guitarist brother Sam Teskey revives vintage 1960s–70s soul with disarming sincerity: a warm, analogue sound, Steve Cropper–style guitars, and a rasping voice that recalls the heyday of Stax and Motown. Captured in an intimate natural setting, the set runs through five songs from their repertoire — “Crying Shame,” “Reason Why,” “Pain And Misery,” “I Get Up” and “Honeymoon” — moving between slow-burning blues and raw-nerved soul ballads. The capture, carefully handled in both image and sound, highlights the band’s organic groove and the raw emotion of the singing. A representative document of the Australian soul revival, this filmed live concert is an ideal entry point into the world of The Teskey Brothers, one of the most endearing acts on the contemporary roots scene.
