Weather Report concert captured in Santa Cruz, California, in 1980. A spearhead of jazz-fusion, the band co-founded by keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophonist Wayne Shorter had reached a kind of live peak, driven by the spectacular playing of bassist Jaco Pastorius. In 1980 the line-up brought together Zawinul, Shorter, Pastorius, drummer Peter Erskine and percussionist Robert Thomas Jr., a quintet renowned for its collective improvisation and seamless transitions between composition and jam. This live capture conveys the rare interplay among these musicians and the harmonic richness of a repertoire at the crossroads of jazz, funk and world music. The full-concert format follows the dynamics of a set where each solo relaunches the whole. A valuable document for fusion fans, this filmed live concert documents one of the greatest bands in the history of electric jazz at its peak. Keywords: Weather Report live, jazz fusion, Jaco Pastorius, filmed concert, 1980. This period coincides with the albums Night Passage (1980) and the double live 8:30, which stand among the group’s discographic peaks, making any surviving concert footage from these years especially prized.
