Wu-Tang Clan — NPR Tiny Desk, 2018

Why this recording

At NPR's Tiny Desk, the Wu-Tang Clan boils its setlist down to a single medley of about twenty minutes, billed in the description as “Wu Classics”. Beyond the four MCs listed on the page, U-God also takes verses, and Young Dirty Bastard, son of Ol' Dirty Bastard, joins the rotation. Watch for the ending: RZA reads a poetic interlude from his phone to close the set. On the crew side, NPR credits Josh Rogosin as audio engineer, five videographers and an edit by Kaylee Domzalski.

On December 5, 2018, the Wu-Tang Clan took over NPR Music’s Tiny Desk in Washington to mark 25 years of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), a cornerstone of New York hip-hop. Crammed behind the office desk, the Staten Island collective turned the intimate format into a full cypher: a roughly twenty-minute medley drawn from a vast catalog, opening with the posse cut “Triumph.” Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Cappadonna and Masta Killa trade verses, lifted by string arrangements from The Green Project that bring a soulful glow back to RZA’s productions. This filmed live performance, stripped of studio tricks, lays bare the group’s vocal interplay and the density of its writing. A sober yet commanding concert, this Tiny Desk has become a benchmark for gauging the longevity of a crew that redefined rap in the early 1990s. An essential document of live hip-hop, worth revisiting for the raw power of its performers.
