Why this recording

Posted by the festival itself, the video presents an hour-long concert given on 8 July 2015 in the auditorium hall of ICE Kraków, also carried by the EBU's Euroradio. By then the duo had more than five years of joint concerts across Europe, the United States and India, according to the festival's introduction. The meeting extends a lineage: Hussain had recorded "Making Music" for ECM with Hariprasad Chaurasia, Rakesh's uncle and teacher. The credits list him on tabla and other percussion as well, widening the rhythmic palette set against the bansuri.

Full live concert by Zakir Hussain and Rakesh Chaurasia, recorded on 8 July 2015 at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre in Poland during the EtnoKraków/Rozstaje festival (Crossroads Festival), one of Europe’s leading world-music gatherings. The performance was also broadcast by the EBU’s Euroradio network, which each year brings together the continent’s public radio stations around folk and living traditions. This duo unites two towering figures of Indian classical music. Zakir Hussain, son of the legendary Ustad Alla Rakha, is regarded as one of the greatest tabla players in the world, an artist of countless international collaborations and a multiple Grammy Award winner. He performs here alongside Rakesh Chaurasia, a virtuoso of the bansuri, the North Indian bamboo flute, and the nephew and disciple of master Hariprasad Chaurasia. Their meeting is built on raga improvisation, rhythmic exchange and the deep mutual listening characteristic of the Indian concert format. This complete recording provides a valuable document of their art in Kraków in 2015, poised between percussion and breath, between the classical tradition of India and the European world-music stage. An essential capture for lovers of tabla, bansuri and live Indian music.
