Why this recording

On 9 July 1999 Al Jarreau played the PWA Zaal at the Hague festival, a few months before the release of Tomorrow Today in March 2000. The North Sea Jazz Archive, the festival's official archive channel, premiered this 70-minute concert on 2 May 2026, and notes that Jarreau was a regular at North Sea. For a 1999 tape, an HD presentation implies a new transfer or an upscale of the archive.

Drawn from the North Sea Jazz Festival archive, this Al Jarreau full concert was filmed on 9 July 1999 in the PWA Zaal, in The Hague (Netherlands). The only singer to have won Grammy Awards in three categories — jazz, R&B and pop — Al Jarreau turns his voice into a genuine instrument: improvised scat, imitations of percussion and guitar, and a sense of swing inherited from his early days alongside George Duke. This live capture restores the stage charisma of an artist who turns every song into a dialogue with his band and audience. The archive footage and festival sound plunge the viewer into the hushed yet electric atmosphere of a great jazz gathering. For fans of vocal jazz and crossover, this video is a precious document: the portrait of a master of vocal improvisation at the turn of the century. A complete filmed concert, to rediscover for the intact virtuosity of one of the greatest jazz singers.
