Cheikh Lô — Porta World Music Festival, 2016

Published on October 4, 2026 by

Live concert by Cheikh Lô at the Porta World Music Festival in Latvia in 2016. A Senegalese singer and multi-instrumentalist born in 1955, Cheikh Lô is one of the great voices of contemporary African music, brought to international attention by the album “Ne La Thiass” produced by Youssou N’Dour. His unique style softens the edges of Senegalese mbalax and infuses it with salsa, Congolese rumba, reggae, folk and jazz, for a swaying, cross-bred pop. On the Latvian festival stage, backed by his band, the artist with his unmistakable rasta look unfolds a warm set in which guitars, percussion and horns carry his supple voice and infectious melodies. Deeply shaped by the Baye Fall spirituality of the Mouride brotherhood, his music combines gentle trance with an invitation to dance. This filmed live recording takes the listener from Dakar to Northern Europe, bearing witness to the reach of a major world-music artist. An ideal document for fans of world music, afro-pop and filmed live concerts, at the crossroads of cultures and continents.
