Chick Corea & the Freedom Band — North Sea Jazz Festival, 2010

Why this recording

The North Sea Jazz Archive channel rewrote this video's description as a tribute to Roy Haynes, who died on November 12, 2024 at 99, and who is behind the drums for Chick Corea here. The two had already recorded Now He Sings, Now He Sobs together in 1968, the same notes recall. On July 10, 2010, the Freedom Band played the Amazon hall at Rotterdam Ahoy, in a slot the festival program listed from 9:45 to 11 p.m.: the 75-minute HD video spans the whole of it.

Full concert by Chick Corea and his Freedom Band, filmed at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in 2010. The American pianist, one of the giants of post-Miles Davis jazz, is joined by a legendary quartet: Roy Haynes on drums, Kenny Garrett on saxophone and Christian McBride on double bass. This live full concert captures the full richness of virtuoso acoustic jazz, blending standards, original compositions and long stretches of collective improvisation. It showcases Corea’s inimitable touch, Roy Haynes’s timeless swing (he passed away in 2024 at 99), Garrett’s lyricism and McBride’s depth. Recorded in high definition on one of the world’s most prestigious jazz stages, this live concert is a precious document uniting several generations of musicians at the peak of their art. A reference for lovers of modern jazz, interplay and acoustic piano, testifying to the vitality of a genre carried here by four exceptional improvisers gathered in the Netherlands in 2010. Essential viewing for any serious jazz enthusiast.
