Earl Klugh — Java Jazz Festival, 2013

Why this recording

Posted by the festival itself six weeks after the show, the video comes from the official Java Jazz channel in standard definition, which limits image detail for a 2013 recording. The billing presents Earl Klugh with Nelson Rangell as featured guest. The twelve-song set makes room for a pause midway: “This Time”, played by Klugh alone, in sixth position. The concert opens with “Brazilian Stomp” and closes with “Heart String”.

Live capture of Earl Klugh’s concert at the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival 2013, on 3 March 2013 in the D2 Hall of JiExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. An American guitarist born in Detroit, Earl Klugh is one of the masters of fingerstyle acoustic guitar and a leading figure of smooth jazz and jazz-pop since the 1970s, shaped by the influence of Chet Atkins and his early work with George Benson. On the large Indonesian stage he draws a programme from his extensive discography, alternating original compositions, ballads and more up-tempo pieces, including a solo-guitar feature within the set. His clear, plectrum-free playing, warm and melodic in tone, perfectly illustrates the refined aesthetic that built his reputation. This live performance, filmed at one of Asia’s biggest jazz festivals, offers a representative survey of Earl Klugh’s stagecraft, in a festival atmosphere that suits both virtuosity and intimacy. A valuable full concert document for lovers of fingerstyle guitar and smooth jazz.
