On 20 July 1979, Brazilian singer Elis Regina sets ablaze the stage of the 13th Montreux Jazz Festival, in a concert that became a legend of Brazilian popular music. Backed by her group — César Camargo Mariano on keyboards and arrangements, Luizão Maia on bass, Hélio Delmiro on guitar, Paulinho Braga on drums and Chico Batera on percussion — she unfolds a repertoire of samba, MPB and bossa nova of rare intensity. The set runs through “Águas de Março,” “Madalena,” “Upa, Neguinho” and the poignant “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista,” carried by her incomparable phrasing and stagecraft. Near the end, multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal joins her for a surprise appearance that became an anthological moment. A precious capture made a few years before her death in 1982, this filmed live concert attests to the total commitment of a performer regarded as one of Brazil’s greatest voices. An essential document of Latin American music on stage.
