Why this recording

Gilberto Gil's first appearance at Montreux, this 14 July 1978 concert opened the festival's Brazilian night. The same show came out as a double album that year; the video, posted by a private uploader in standard definition, gives its filmed version. The programme opens with "Chuck Berry Fields Forever", goes through "São João, Xangô Menino", written for Doces Bárbaros, and Luiz Gonzaga's "Respeita Januário", then ends with a run leading from "Procissão" to "Mamãe Eu Quero". The band brings together Pepeu Gomes, Jorge Gomes, Rubens Silva, Maurício Carvalho and Djalma Corrêa.

Filmed live concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978, where Gilberto Gil brings Brazilian popular music (MPB) to a Swiss stage. A major figure of Tropicália alongside Caetano Veloso, the Bahian singer and guitarist blends samba, reggae, funk and Afro-Brazilian rhythms in a radiant set. He is backed notably by Pepeu Gomes on guitar, Jorge Gomes on drums and Djalma Corrêa on percussion, for a colorful, trance-like music in which Gil’s voice and guitar converse with an inventive rhythm section. This live performance documents a pivotal period, as the artist, newly back from exile, carries the colors of Bahia to the great international festivals. Keywords: Gilberto Gil live, Montreux 1978, MPB, Brazilian music, full concert.
