Grand Funk Railroad — Live in Tokyo, 1974

Why this recording

A straight transfer from a Japanese LaserDisc released by Daiei in 1986, uploaded as is by a collector's channel: the document's value lies first in that original source. Its 55 minutes catch Grand Funk in 1974, the year of the Shinin' On album and tour, in the four-piece line-up with Craig Frost on keyboards. Running shorter than a full show from that period, it looks like a condensed video programme. A useful reference for seeing a stadium band on stage at the height of its commercial success.

Live concert by Grand Funk Railroad filmed in Japan in 1974, restored from a Japanese LaserDisc. A hugely popular American hard rock band from Michigan, Grand Funk Railroad enjoyed colossal success in the early 1970s, with anthems such as We’re an American Band, The Loco-Motion and Shinin’ On. This full concert presents the group as a quartet — Mark Farner (vocals, guitar), Don Brewer (drums), Mel Schacher (bass) and Craig Frost (keyboards) — at the peak of its stage power. Massive riffs, heavy groove and raw energy: the capture conveys the thick, direct sound of one of the leading American rock bands of the era, before a rapturous Japanese audience. This live concert is a rare and precious document for fans of hard rock and 1970s rock, testifying to the live intensity of a legendary band often cited as a pioneer of stadium rock. An authentic dive into American rock during a decisive decade, captured in Tokyo in 1974. A powerful vintage full concert.
