Live session by Grupo Niche captured in the SiriusXM studios in 2025. Founded in Cali in 1980 by Jairo Varela, Grupo Niche is one of Colombia’s most influential salsa orchestras, renowned for its polished arrangements, flamboyant brass and hits that became genre classics such as « Cali Pachanguero » and « Gotas de Lluvia ». In the intimate setting of a filmed studio session, the ensemble delivers a precise live performance, where choruses, Afro-Colombian percussion and piano voicings converse with the signature swing of Cali salsa. This capture highlights the cohesion of a seasoned outfit and the richness of its arrangements, right up close to the musicians. More than four decades after its founding, the orchestra keeps carrying Jairo Varela’s legacy while asserting an instantly recognisable sound, between melodic elegance and danceable pulse. This studio session offers a rare vantage point on the work of an ensemble that has exported Cali salsa far beyond Colombia. A live concert perfect for discovering, in 2025, Colombian salsa carried by Grupo Niche, filmed in the SiriusXM studios.
Grupo Niche — Live Performance SiriusXM, 2025
Why this recording
Recorded for Caliente, SiriusXM's tropical music channel, this session was posted on 11 April 2025 by Grupo Niche on its own channel, a few days before the orchestra's concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on 17 April. The radio format sets the frame: half an hour of music played in the studio, made first for broadcast and then filmed in HD. It shows the Cali orchestra in a radio setting rather than on stage, at a time when it was playing major American halls.
